This Creative Multilingualism project has the chief goal of giving visibility to heritage languages – traditionally not included in the curriculum – and raising awareness about multilingualism. Suggested activities adopt a translanguaging pedagogy inviting reflection on the theme ‘language and identity’. Materials supporting the design and delivery of this multilingual performance can be used or adapted as required.

Embedding translanguaging in your teaching practice, teachers, pupils and researcher work collaboratively towards the creation of a multilingual performance to be showcased at the end of term. I have designed two didactic units for the First (P2–P4) and Second (P5–P7) Levels of the CfE which I will introduce to teaching staff. I will visit your school virtually or in person and deliver a workshop on translanguaging and introduce the teaching materials. The project is divided into three stages.

Stage I — Prep. Activities with carefully planned translanguaging activities on the theme ‘Language and Identity’. Pupils deepen their understanding of culture both locally and in the wider world trough interacting with two non-gendered outer space characters who invite them to use and share their home language and aspects of their heritage and culture with teachers and peers.

In Stage II — Working collaboratively, pupils, teachers and researcher take aaction research approach to create a multilingual performance piece showcasing the home languages present in the classroom and with a strong focus on the embodiment of the language and the employment of semiotic resources for communicative purposes.

Finally, Stage III is the creation of your own Multilingual Performance.
